N95 now with Garmin GPS!!!

Thanks to Charsiu, I could finally harness the power of the intergrated GPS in my Nokia N95:

Here's Charsiu's instructions, shamelessly lifted from his blog:

"The Nokia N95 with built-in GPS comes with a software called Nokia Maps. But to use the voice activated navigation, you need to pay. No good. The built-in GPS in the N95 also cannot be used with any third party software.

This write-up is how to enable the N95 built-in GPS to be used with Garmin Mobile XT software, where we can download free maps from local portal Malsingmaps. Details are taken from this wonderful site.

Step 1:

Step 2:

  • Sign up and log in to this forum here.
  • Download this file to your PC: Garmin Mobile XT Keygen.
  • Launch GMXT (in the phone), go to Settings -> About. Make note of your “Card ID”.
  • Launch the above keygen program (Ed: on your PC), and enter the “Card ID” you see from GMXT's About page. Hit Generate to get your device unlock code.
  • Copy (CTRL+C) the Device unlock code to clipboard.
  • Now open the Notepad and paste (CTRL+V) the key and save the file as SW.UNL
  • (Ed: Highlight the filename SW.UNL, hit F2 and rename to SW.UNL only, remove the .txt)
  • Ignore the Map unlock code.
  • Put your newly created file to your phone’s “\Garmin” directory and restart GMXT.
  • Program should now recognize your built-in GPS (if not go to “Settings\System” and choose “Remote GPS”, select ”Use Attached/Built-in GPS”) and you should be able to use detailed maps.

Step 3 (Malaysia and Singapore users only):

  • Sign up and log in to the Malsingmaps.com portal.
  • Download the following free map: West Malaysia and Singapore map
  • Extract and put the GMAPSUPP.IMG file in the phone’s “\Garmin” directory.
  • Launch GMXT and you should be able to start using.

To speed up the satellite locking time, enable the Assisted GPS feature in the phone. In my case, the N95 8GB, go to “Tools\Settings\General\Positioning\Positioning methods”, enable “Assisted GPS”. If you set the positioning server access point to your mobile operator’s network, then data usage charges will apply, normally around 3-4kB.

No more wrong turns, save petrol and happy travelling!"

One tip: Slide the keypad out coz it really does shorten the satellite locking time!

heh, other than the garmin xt, u could use mapking 2007, paired with malsingmap. i have it on my hp pda.

its kinda fun to touge with ur gps on ur dash, hahah, u could kinda tell what sorta corner is up ahead, but dont rely too much on it. sometimes it has a lag error if there is too much shubbery around. i've tested my dad's holux gps module and it didn't worked well in genting sempah

thanks for the straight forward guide. thanks charsiu! Husband been pestering me to install this but I was too proud (:p) to meddle with my phone. We will should find this useful for our next road trip. Will try out the RaceChrono too

Hi Liza,
It's really pretty easy to install, just make sure you get an in-car charger coz this does drain the battery somewhat.

So instead of arguing who pointed who to the wrong direction, you could now blame the new scapegoat - Your cellphone :P !

Dear Touge King,

I have tried and finally managed to install and it worked, the whole day, today 8/7/2008.

Well, what can I say? thanks a lot for this wonderful software.

kaligirl said...

I tried everything that you mentioned, but it still cannot detect any GPS device. I also reinstalled everything twice and it still won't work. Any suggestions?

kaligirl2 said...

I tried everything but the program still does not recognized the Attached/Built in GPS. When opening Settings\Systems it only says "Pair New GPS." I have tried to install it three times already following the directions precisely. Any recommendations on how to fix this problem?

Anonymous said...

kaligirl2, I've had the same problem but finally manage to fix it. the SW.UNL should be of the UNL file type not text. When saving using notepad, try changing the file type to all types. Got mine works once i did that. Thx touge

hi,

Before I rename the .UNL file, I can't find the option to use built in GPS.Later, I manage to change the option to use built in gps after rename the file correctly. But the problem is still, can't find gps device. I am using nokia E71. Hope some one has successfully install the app on E71. Please advice. Thanks.

Hey, I had the same problem with the .unl file.

If you use Map source to back up an unlock key it will create a true .unl file.

You can use that file and dump the serial number in there. Also, you dont want the file to be named SW.UNL if it is a UNL file. Instead, it should just be SW.

Once I did that the software had the option to use the internal GPS. Now I just need to download some maps!

Ok, so far so good. I got the Garmin software to work with my Nokia N95 GPS but it shows me only a very basic world map with very limited streets etc. When I try to navigate it stells me to go to Garmin.com to get the maps. How and where do I download the actual maps for North America and where do I get the unlock codes if needed? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I tried this and had two problems:

1. I did everything in Step 1, but I could not see how to run Garmin on my phone, until I ran "Garmin > Apps > Symbian > RES > GarminMobileXT.sis"

2. Now when it runs it says "Not enough memory to run Garmin Mobile XT (at least 8MB required)"

Did I do something wrong? I have the original N95.

Anonymous said...

I've got it working now! I just restarted the phone and this cleared up the memory problem. It seems the Nokia N95 is not so good at memory management :)

This site was a big help to me cheers. This is for people having trouble unlocking maps, thanks to the dude on demonoid

When you are trying to unlock your maps on City Nav Europe NT v9

Make sure you connect the nav unit (Or Symbian Phone) first.

1. Rename the folder to Garmin City Navigator Europe NT 2009.
2. Rename the keygen to garmin_keygen.
3. Go to the IMG folder and right click "CNEUNT2009Update_ENU" and click on install.(This is for the English version select the appropriate language if you require another language)
4. Wait for the install to complete.
5. Go to Start=>All programs=>Garmin=>Mapsource
6. To get your Unit ID. Go to Utilities Tab=>Get Unit ID=>Copy Unit ID
7. Run the keygen and put your units ID at the top and hit generate
8. Where it says Select Map Product use "custom mapset". A box will pop up and use MapID 378 and click generate.
9. With Mapsource still open hit Ctrl+U. Go to Unlock Regions Tab and hit add.
10. Paste “Your Software unlock” code into that.
11. Repeat step 8 & 9 only paste “Your map unlock code” into that.
12. Your Garmin unit should appear as a drive in Windows Explorer. Select this drive and in the directory "Garmin", backup gmapprom.img then delete it from your device(should be about a 1 Gig file). Check to see how much free space you have on your unit. You will need 1580mb at least free on the unit. Delete any unnecessary files like default music files and images etc etc.
13. Load up map install and select which regions you want (most likely all) and click next. The creating map section will now take around 2-3 hours (long I know!!).
14. Once created it you will need to transfer to the unit another lengthy 1.5 hour process.
15. You should now see a successful transfer of map data type message.
16. Disconnect the unit switch off and switch back on to reboot unit and you are done. You can confirm that you now have the new map data in the spanner section of your unit under maps and then map info.
17. ALL DONE!!!!! :)
